TRM NEWS – Summer 2007

J.S. BOLGER WINS TRAINER OF THE QUARTER

The winner of the TRM/Trainer Magazine ‘’Trainer of the Quarter Award’’ went to Mr. J.S. Bolger for the outstanding achievements of his filly Finsceal Beo in winning both the Newmarket, and Curragh 1000 Guineas ,and placing second in the French equivalent.

There were wild scenes more reminiscent of Cheltenham than Newmarket when Finsceal Beo landed her first classic, while clocking up the fastest time of any Guineas winner of either sex. At the end of May she added the Boyle Sports Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh, being only the second filly to land the Anglo-Irish 1000 Guineas double, with Attraction three years ago the first to break the mould.

TOWNEND TRIUMPHS AT THIRLESTANE

TRM’s sponsored event rider Oliver Townend swept the board at Scotland’s top equestrian event the Thirlestane Castle Horse Trials.  In an outstanding run of form Oliver won the intermediate and the advanced classes, was runner-up and sixth in the OI and third in the CIC** and capped it all by taking the Scottish Open Championship with his European Championships ride Flint Curtis.

Due to the cancellations of numerous events further south in the UK, Thirlestane attracted record entries.  A field of 62 contested the Open Championship. Oliver piped the defending champion, Ruth Edge, this time riding Muschamp Impala, to the post. Three time-penalties, in addition to one jumping mistake, in the final phase proved costly, giving Oliver victory by a margin of just 1.7 penalties.

Oliver’s great success at Thirlestane helped him advance by 56 points in the eventing league leader board resulting in Oliver extending his lead over William Fox Pitt and Andrew Nicholson.  Oliver has secured his spot for this year's European Championships at Pratoni del Vivaro (13-16 September) by finishing sixth in the CIC*** at Barbury Castle with Flint Curtis.

TWO MORE GROUP 1 WINNERS RAISED ON CALPHORMIN

The grey wet skies over Ascot turned the turf into a soft and slightly sticky carpet on which the three year old chestnut filly Indian Ink romped home sixth lengths ahead of the field in the Coronation Stakes at Ascot. The Coronation Stakes is a Group 1 race, run over one mile for three year old fillies.  The Indian Ridge filly who is trained by Richard Hannon was an 8 to 1 shot in the field of 13, and was toward the rear of the field when she began making progress about two furlongs out. She hit the front about one furlong from home enjoying the turf rated good to soft. Indian Ink had already experienced Group 1 success when she won the Sky Bet Cheverly Park Stakes as a juvenile.  She is owned by Raymond Tooth and is bred by Killeen Castle Stud in Ireland.  Indian Ink was raised on Calphormin.

Soldier of Fortune dominated ten challengers in a nine length win in the €1.5 million Budweiser Irish Derby in the Curragh recently.  The O’Brien stable was dominant in the race with Alexander of Hales finishing second while Eagle Mountain who was the 6 to 4 favorite settled for third.

Soldier of Fortune who was fifth in the Vodafone Epsom Derby simply powered away from the field under the Ballydoyle number two rider Seamus Heffernan to equal the winning margin of Sinndar in 2000.  The bay Galileo colt sent off at odds of 5 to 1 completed 1.5 miles on turf rated as soft in 2.36 minutes.  The winning colt was bred in Ireland by another famous Irish trainer J.S. Bolger and was also raised on Calphormin.

ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RIDING CLUBS FESTIVAL 2007

The feature competition the Thoroughbred Remedies International Team Show Jumping Qualifier was won by Winterdown Riding Club who prevented a three in a row for their neighboring club after a thrilling three way jump off in the main arena. A total of 12 teams from clubs throughout the eight regions went to battle for the coveted honour of representing their country at the AIRC International Show Jumping Championships in July where they will face opposition from Northern Ireland, England, Wales & Italy.  Winterdown Riding Club will represent Ireland at the AIRC International Show Jumping Championships next month.

SWAIL STEERS TOWARDS SAMSUNG SUPERLEAGUE

The TRM sponsored rider Conor Swail has had great success in the Irish Grand Prix league to date, with two wins at Rolestown and Boswell.  However his main aim this year is to help Ireland get back into the Samsung Super League.

He is well on his way to achieving this ambition, with no less than three Nations Cups victories to date this year.  The first major team success for Conor was in May when the Irish team proved unstoppable in the Austrian Nations Cup in Linz finishing on 12 faults followed by Italy who finished on 24 faults.  Ireland led from the first round, with Conor on 'Rivaal' and Commdt Gerry Flynn with 'Mo Chroi' both delivering clear rounds, while Shane Breen had a single fence down. Ryan Crumley dropped two poles with 'Baltimore', and did not go forward into the second round. Conor repeated his faultless performance and led Ireland to triumphant victory.

Conor and the Irish team then moved onto to Norway where not even the heavy rain could dampen the delight of the team who racked up another notable Nations Cup victory.  In the first round, Ireland tied with Germany and the home team Norway on zero penalties. Irish Team Manager Robert Splaine sent him out to do battle on Rivaal against Norway’s Geir Gulliksen on L’Espoir to decide the outright winner.  Conor jumped a textbook clear in the jump off while Gulliksen had one fence down securing the Cup for Ireland.

Ireland produced their most convincing win of the Nations Cup series in early July, defeating 11 other teams in Lummen, Belgium.  Conor and his fellow team mates secured four first round clears, and a total of two double clear rounds to give Ireland its fourth Nations Cup victory of the year. Team Manager Robert Splaine stated that “Our team did a fantastic job against strong opposition.  I cannot praise them highly enough."

Ireland is currently top of the FEI Nations Cup rankings which will hopefully lead to Ireland being promoted to the Samsung Super League.

ENUCO – EQUINE NUTRITION CONFERENCE VIENNA

TRM recently presented a research paper on the TRM ulcer product GNF at the prestigious Equine Nutrition Conference (ENUCO) held in Vienna, Austria.  The paper which was presented to leading veterinarians and nutritionists from throughout the World was an “investigation into the efficacy of a commercially available gastric supplement GNF for the treatment and prevention of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)”.

GNF is a unique supplement for daily feeding to horses in order to maintain optimum gut health and function while allowing maximum utilization of feed.  During 2006 a clinical study was undertaken to assess the benefits of feeding GNF in a National Hunt thoroughbred training yard.

The research paper concluded that Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) has been found to be widely prevalent in both racing, and non-racing horses. The trial investigated the efficacy of the product in the treatment of EGUS and found that horses supplemented with GNF for six weeks showed significant (P<0.05) reduction in overall ulcer score. It was therefore be concluded that GNF had positive results in reducing the severity of EGUS in affected horses.
